AHA Women's Notes: Lindenwood Dives Into AHA Play, Penn State Stays Hot

It’s a full slate of Atlantic Hockey this weekend as all seven AHA teams will be in action – including a trio of conference matchups.

Penn State hosts Lindenwood for a pair of games in Happy Valley, while Syracuse hosts RIT and Robert Morris heads to Delaware. Mercyhurst will also host UConn in non-conference action.

Here’s what fans can watch for this weekend in AHA women’s hockey.

Lindenwood Dives Into Deep End

Lindenwood is the final AHA club without a conference game played, but the Lions will change that against No. 6 Penn State (8-0-0, 4-0-0). The Nittany Lions currently sit atop the AHA standings with 12 points – seven ahead of second-place Syracuse – and swept Mercyhurst last weekend.

Lindenwood (1-7-0) is coming off a much-needed bye. The Lions earned their first win last time out, as Lindenwood split its series against Merrimack. Lindenwood earned a 6-3 win in Game 1 before falling 3-1 in the finale, and the focus now shifts to conference play.

The Lions are led by junior forward Zsofia Pazmandi (3-1-4), but offense has been an issue through eight games, especially away from home. Lindenwood is 0-4-0 in road games and has been out-scored 17-2 over those four contests.

Janecke’s Strong Start

It’s no secret Tessa Janecke has been among the nation’s best players in recent years, and it’s only continued this fall. The senior forward is coming off a four-point weekend and has recorded points in all six games, racking up 10 points (5-5-10) in that stretch. She also owns a five-game goal streak.

The hot start gives Janecke 68 goals and 163 points in her tremendous NCAA career, and she’s also now a plus-90 over her 120 games. Janecke’s five goals are currently tied for third among AHA skaters and her 10 points are tied for second.

Women’s Notes

  • The AHA announced its Players of the Week on Tuesday. Penn State forward Tessa Janecke, Penn State defenseman Danica Maynard, Penn State goaltender Katie Desa and Syracuse rookie Ava Drabyk took home the respective honors.
  • Maynard leads all NCAA freshmen with 13 points (5-8-13), which is also tied for the most among NCAA defensemen.
  • RIT owns the NCAA’s top power play at 32.4%, while its penalty kill (92.3%) is the AHA’s best. The Tigers have netted 11 power-play tallies through eight games. Riley Gramlich and Brac Kelley have scored two each.
  • Delaware freshman defenseman Lexie Lonask leads the nation with 31 blocked shots.
  • Mercyhurst will host No. 8 UConn this weekend in Erie. It’s the third consecutive ranked opponent and fourth of the season for the Lakers. Mercyhurst is 3-5-0 this season.
