As AHL Season Begins, Some Top Free Agents Are Still Available

A long list of free agents remain as the American Hockey League is now underway.

With the AHL season now underway, several high-end players are still without contracts.

Some of these players went to NHL training camps on professional tryout deals. A few went to AHL training camps as well. Plans and hopes fell through. Some spent last season battling injuries. Others had ill-fated moves overseas. Some saw their performance drop. But more than a few put together standout – even career – seasons. A few won the Calder Cup. Others came very close.

AHL rosters often are in flux for the first several weeks of October and November. Sometimes rookies prove to be overwhelmed for the AHL level, and it becomes clear quickly that reinforcements are needed. Injuries hit. NHL parent teams come calling for players. Sometimes players who signed overseas find themselves free agents once again and are looking to return to North America.

Let’s break down some of these still-available free agents.

Troy Grosenick (G) – Iowa Wild: A knee injury cost Grosenick his 2024-25 season. He has a proven history of being able to handle a heavy workload as well as mentoring a prospect in a tandem.
Age: 36
2024-25: Did not play

Malcolm Subban (G) – Belleville Senators: It was only two-and-a-half years that Subban took the Rochester Americans to the Eastern Conference Finals. Since then he has appeared in games with the Springfield Thunderbirds, Cleveland Monsters, and Belleville. Solid and reliable.
Age: 32
2024-25: 24 GP; 11-6-5 | 3.13 | .883

Dustin Tokarski (G) – Chicago Wolves: Tokarski, a two-time Calder Cup champion, started last season without a job before the Carolina Hurricanes called on him. He ended up getting into six NHL games and also stabilizing the Wolves in net.
Age: 35
2024-25: 21 GP; 11-8-1 | 2.84 | .897

Grant Hutton (D) – Bridgeport Islanders: Just about nothing went right last season in Bridgeport, but Hutton came through as one of the team’s few bright spots. He also earned 13 games with the parent New York Islanders. A solid leader, he is also a right-handed shot.
Age: 29
2024-25: 29 GP; 0-5-5

Jarred Tinordi (D) – Calgary Wranglers: Injury limited Tinordi to just 30 games last season in Calgary, but what he brings is quite known at this point: he’s physical, defensive-minded, and experienced. He also has played 205 career NHL games.
Age: 33
2024-25: 30 GP; 1-4-5

Christian Wolanin (D) – Abbotsford Canucks: Wolanin being unsigned is one of the biggest surprises of the offseason. He won the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s top defenseman in 2022-23 and put together another strong campaign last season with the Calder Cup champion Canucks. He excelled in the Calder Cup Playoffs and also holds 86 games of NHL experience.

Age: 30
2024-25: 58 GP; 4-36-40

Kyle Criscuolo (F) – Charlotte Checkers: Going to training camp with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins failed to yield a job for a player who took a key face-off draw for the Checkers in the final minute of Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals this past June. Head coaches value Criscuolo’s intelligent, trustworthy play. He hit an AHL career-best 19 goals last season.
Age: 33
2024-25: 70 GP; 19-16-35

Chase De Leo (F) – Milwaukee Admirals: Following a frustrating move overseas, De Leo came back to North America at midseason and proved to be a critical addition to what was an ever-changing Milwaukee roster. He has been a captain at the AHL level and has always possessed an excellent motor.
Age: 29
2024-25: 34 GP; 6-10-16

Jujhar Khaira (F) – Abbotsford Canucks: Not much was happening for Khaira until a March trade sent him to Abbotsford. He stepped into the Abbotsford line-up and offered size and physical play. His arrival served as an important catalyst for the Canucks’ eventual run to the Calder Cup.
Age: 31
2024-25: 35 GP; 6-5-11

Will Lockwood (F) – Charlotte Checkers: Lockwood is another player from this past June’s Calder Cup Finals who is still without a contract. He can play up and down any team’s line-up and contribute by doing whatever might be needed on a particular night.
Age: 27
2024-25: 52 GP; 10-11-21

Mason Jobst (F) – Rochester Americans: Serving as captain with Rochester last season, Jobst helped to lead the Amerks to the North Division Finals. Someone who struggled to produce much offense early in his pro career, Jobst has turned into a pretty dependable producer with 40 goals across the past two seasons.
Age: 31
2024-25: 70 GP; 18-19-37

Brett Murray (F) – Rochester Americans: Despite a 27-goal season with the Amerks, a selection for the AHL All-Star Classic, and a preseason tryout this fall with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Murray remains unsigned.
2024-25: 66 GP; 27-22-49
Age: 27

Brennan Saulnier (F) – Hershey Bears: Saulnier is a modest 6-foot, 170 pounds, but he plays an outsized, ornery game. Quite willing and able to irritate opponents.
2024-25: 39 GP; 4-6-10
Age: 31

Also available: Michael Houser (G), Hunter Miska (G), Travis Dermott (D), Ben Harpur (D), Joakim Ryan (D), Andy Welinski (D), Corey Andonovski (F), Josh Lopina (F), Gerry Mayhew (F), Scott Reedy (F), Nathan Smith (F), Daniel Walcott (F), Max Willman (F)
