The Rochester Americans are one of the oldest teams in North American pro hockey, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2025-26. For more than half of those 70 years, Don Stevens has been the voice of the team’s broadcasts.

The Americans announced Friday morning that Stevens will call games for his 40th season before hanging up the headset for good after the final buzzer sounds on the 2025-26 campaign.

Stevens has been in sports broadcasting for nearly 60 years, an astonishing feat.

“There are so many mixed emotions running through me that I don’t quite know what to think or feel,” said Stevens. “But what I do know, as I approach my 58th year of broadcasting and 40th season in Rochester, is that I am truly humbled and blessed by the immense support I have had and still receive in my career. I plan on spending the upcoming season honoring and thanking all of you for what has been an incredible journey over the years. Here’s to one more year, and, of course, Go Amerks!”

As anyone who is a fan of any team can attest, the relationship with the voice of that team is one of the most special. In Stevens’s case, that relationship has spanned generations.

He called more than 3,300 Amerks games, according to the team. When he started in the 1986-87 season, the AHL was a 13-team league, based exclusively in the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Now the league boasts 32 teams from coast to coast and throughout Canada.

Stevens was on the mic for each of Rochester’s last two Calder Cups, coming in 1987 and 1996.

"There is something uniquely special about the relationship between a team's broadcaster and its fans," said Scott Howson, American Hockey League President and Chief Executive Officer. "Don has provided the soundtrack for literally generations of Amerks fans, guiding them through all the indelible moments that have defined the franchise over the last 40 years. We look forward to helping celebrate his career this season."

“No other person in the history of our organization has been more synonymous with Amerks hockey than Don Stevens,” said Amerks Vice President of Business Operations, Chad Buck. “For four decades, Don has narrated some of the most unforgettable moments in team history, which to this day have been immortalized by his unique and distinctive call. It’s only fitting that his final season in Rochester coincides with a milestone season in the history of our franchise for which he’s been a huge part of for nearly 40 years.”

Stevens is a native of Wainwright, Alberta. In addition to his AHL work, he has called international hockey at the Spengler Cup, called professional soccer for decades and served in a number of roles within the Americans organization.

Stevens won the AHL’s James H. Ellery Memorial Award twice, recognized for outstanding media coverage of the league. He was the 50th member inducted into the Rochester Americans’ Hall of Fame in 2010-11. Additionally, Stevens has won many awards and has been inducted into numerous Halls of Fame in the Rochester sports community.

The final season of this truly remarkable broadcaster will begin Oct. 10 as Rochester takes on the Toronto Marlies on home ice.
