The highly-anticipated inaugural season for the ECHL’s Greensboro Gargoyles got a little more exciting with the announcement of their first player signing. The team announced Wednesday that ECHL veteran Logan Nelson is the first-ever Gargoyle, giving the club a legitimate scoring threat right off the bat.

For Nelson, it will be the second straight season he plays for an expansion team after skating for the Tahoe Knight Monsters in their inaugural campaign. But he’ll find a familiar face behind the bench.

Gargoyles head coach Scott Burt had Nelson as his captain with the Rapid City Rush in 2023-24.

The Rogers, Minn., native will be entering his 12th season in the ECHL, having begun his pro career with the now-defunct Quad City Mallards. He has also had stints with the Wichta Thunder, Norfolk Admirals, Orlando Solar Bears, Fort Wayne Komets, Indy Fuel, Atlanta Gladiators and also spent a season in the SPHL with the Birmingham Bulls, leading the league in scoring that season. Nelson also got a recall to the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL during the 2021-22 season.

He has appeared in 576 ECHL games, producing 424 points. He has not had fewer than 50 points in any of his last four seasons as Nelson appears to get better with age. The 31-year-old is more of a playmaker, but also has 157 goals to his name in the ECHL.

The Gargoyles are getting a proven veteran who can produce and has the experience to help an expansion team find its way. Greensboro will have its work cut out for them, playing in the North Division next season.

But the team will also have a lot of eyeballs on them, given the high-profile ownership group that includes Spittin’ Chiclets stars Paul Bissonette, Ryan Whitney, Keith Yandle and Mike Grinell. Getting a veteran like Nelson who has seen a little bit of everything in his career to this point should bode well for both him and the fledgling team.

The Greensboro Gargoyles, affiliated with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and AHL’s Chicago Wolves, open the 2025-26 season with a home series against the Jacksonville Icemen, Oct. 18 and 19.
