The New York Islanders won the Draft Lottery and have the top pick for the first time since 2009 and will take the stage to announce that selection on June 27.
Debate has been mild for who exactly will claim that honor, and although he didn't receive as much game time this season as he would've hoped, there seems to be a clear cut answer as to who the Islanders will choose.

Who Is The 2025 NHL Draft Projected No. 1 Pick?
Left-handed defender Michael Schaefer has been the talk of the town after an impressive 2024-2025 season despite numerous setbacks. Schaefer missed out on the first nine games with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League due to mononucleosis, but came back as if he never left, racking up 22 points, seven goals and 15 assists in just 17 games with the Otters.
He faced another blow when he suffered a broken collarbone during his second game with Team Canada in the World Junior Championship, missing the last three months of the season.
Once fully healed, he returned to play for the U18 Canadian team in the IIHF Hlinka/Gretzky Cup and helped lead his team to a gold medal with two goals and four assists.
Schaefer is unique in the way that his statistics aren't really doing the talking, but it's rather his character and resilience. He was one of 90 prospects invited to the 2025 NHL Draft Combine, where he spoke with multiple team general managers, including Philadelphia Flyers' Daniel Briere.
Briere said that Schaefer's energy was unlike anyone else's, and had positivity written all over it.
The 17-year-old looks to be the next NHL phenom, and FloHockey's Chris Peters agrees in his latest NHL mock draft.
Who Else Is In The Lead For The NHL Draft No. 1 Pick?
It's almost certain that the New York Islanders won't pass up the opportunity to develop a generational product like Schaefer, but nothing is guaranteed, especially when New York native James Hagens is a top five prospect in reach.
But Hagens doesn't touch FloHockey's top five in the mock draft, which leaves the real competition to be centers Anton Frondell and Michael Misa.
Only time will tell when the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft premieres on Friday.
