Calder Cup Finals To Begin June 13 As Charlotte Awaits Abbotsford Or Texas

We’re still waiting on the last team to get in, but we now know when the Calder Cup Finals will start.

Regardless of who wins the ongoing Western Conference Finals, the Charlotte Checkers will host Game 1 on June 13 at Bojangles Coliseum. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET.

The Checkers are waiting on either the Abbotsford Canucks or Texas Stars. Abbotsford has a 3-1 lead in the series with a chance to close it out as soon as Thursday night. Regadless of when the series ends, though, the Calder Cup Finals dates are locked on.

Here is the complete schedule relased by the AHL Thursday.

The Charlotte Checkers advanced to their second ever Calder Cup Finals after sweeping the Laval Rocket earlier this week. Winners of the Cup in 2019, Charlotte will be looking to add to its trophy cabinet, only this time as a member of the Florida Panthers organization. They were the Carolina Hurricanes’ affiliate last time they won.

Charlotte and Florida became the first NHL parent club and AHL affiliate to reach the finals in their respective leagues since the Pittsburgh and Wilkes/Barre-Scranton Penguins did it in 2008.

They’ll go 10 days between games in the playoffs, giving the veteran team plenty of time to rest up before taking on one of the upstart clubs from the West.

Abbotsford took a commanding 3-1 series lead Wednesday night after forward Danila Klimovich scored a beautiful double-overtime game-winning goal for the key road win. Texas will try to get back in the series with one more home game on Friday night before the series shifts back to Abbotsford if necessary.

These Calder Cup Playoffs have been absolutely wild, with a ton of surprising results, entertaining games and unbelievable individual performances. Regardless of which Western team gets in, this has all the makings of an incredible championship series.
