Team Canada handed Sweden its first loss of the 2025 IIHF World Championship with a 5–3 victory in Stockholm, powered by standout performances from phenom Macklin Celebrini and Nathan MacKinnon.

Travis Sanheim opened the scoring just 18 seconds into regulation, setting an early tone that Canada maintained throughout. 

Despite a string of penalties in the second period, the Canadians held their composure, limiting Sweden’s power-play success and maintaining control of the game.

Celebrini’s highlight-reel goal and MacKinnon’s sharp finish helped secure a lead Sweden were unable to overcome. 

The result ends Sweden’s undefeated streak and sets the stage for a high-stakes playoff round, with quarterfinal action beginning Thursday, May 22.

Hockey Canada, Macklin Celebrini Defeat Sweden

Final: Sweden 3, Canada 5

Macklin Celebrini notched his third goal of the IIHF World Championship as Team Canada defeated a previously undefeated Sweden team at home in Avicii Arena in Stockholm. 

Travis Sanheim scored for Canada only 18 seconds into the game before Sweden tied it up three minutes later. In all there were four goals in the first period, including three for Team Canada.

Macklin Celebrini and Nathan MacKinnon were able to pad Canada's lead after that, securing the win as these teams head towards these IIHF quarterfinals.
