Howard, beat out Zeev Buium of Denver and Ryan Leonard of Boston College, both teammates of his as the 2024 World Junior Championship where the trio won gold together.
With 26 goals this season, Howard finished third in that category and is currently fifth in the NCAA in points. The junior forward is in his second season at Michigan State after transferring from Minnesota Duluth.
A native of Hudson, Wisconsin, Howard announced recently that he is planning to return to Michigan State for his senior season. Many believed that he would be signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, but the two sides could not come to an agreement, leading Howard to return.
With the “Ice Man” driving the offense, Michigan State won the Big Ten regular-season title. Howard then scored the game-winning goal in the Big Ten Championship game in overtime. Michigan State, however, was stunned in the first round of the NCAA tournament with a late goal against Cornell.
Michigan State appears poised to return many of their top players including Howard, goalie Trey Augustine (DET) and forward Charlie Stramel (MIN), among others. They could be a heavy favorite to win the NCAA title and Howard could become the first ever two-time Hobey Baker winner if he manages to outperform this season.
Howard is the first Hobey Winner from Michigan State since Ryan Miller claimed the award in 2001.
In 108 college games, Howard has scored 105 career points. Additionally, he won the 2024 gold medal at the World Junior Championship, scoring two goals for Team USA in the championship game. He was selected 31st overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by Tampa Bay.
