Sure, it’s still super early in the 2024 collegiate softball season, especially when it comes to conference play, but getting out to a good start can be crucial. 

UNC Wilmington and Elon both have been able to do that, at least in their Coastal Athletic Association games, but their three-game clash this weekend in Wilmington, North Carolina, will be important for standings and momentum.

Right now, the two are tied with Campbell at 3-0. But while Campbell hosts struggling Towson, what happens in Wilmington is pretty important. Not to mention, Delaware and Hofstra are 2-1, and Monmouth and Drexel are 1-1 in conference play.

UNCW probably has the upper hand this weekend, as the Seahawks are 12-9 overall and riding a three-game winning streak where they outscored their opponent 19-1. That opponent? Hampton in conference play. It’s all part of a six-game CAA run for the Seahawks.

Elon is 8-15 overall and coming off a 12-1 loss to North Carolina on Tuesday. The Phoenix have lost four or more consecutive games twice this season.

UNC Wilmington and Elon were not ranked in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.

In looking at the newest RPI (Rating Percentage Index), UNCW is up five spots to No. 141, and Elon is close behind (though down four spots) at No. 143. The RPI is based on the winning percentage and strength of schedule for each team.
