Canada’s 2024 World Junior Championship and quest for a third consecutive gold medal ended today in Gothenburg in a quarterfinal loss to the Czechs. This is the first time since 2019 in Vancouver that Canada has failed to reach the final game of the tournament, having appeared in each of the last four gold-medal games.

St. Louis Blues prospect Jakub Stancl scored with 11.7 seconds remaining in regulation to give Czechia the stunning result, ending Canada's tournament with a 3-2 defeat.

The Czechs got off to a good start with a goal off the stick of Stancl who fired a shot from distance that beat Mathis Rousseau blocker-side.

Rousseau bounced back well, stopping a Dominik Rymon penalty shot, but in the closing two minutes of the period had a moment he’d probably like to have back.

Jiri Kulich (BUF) found Tomas Cibulka, who fired a low, hard shot that fit under Rousseau’s stick and through his pads somehow as the Czechs took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The second period belonged to Canada, though. Matthew Wood (NSH) kicked off the scoring in the second period, less than five minutes into the middle frame, with a spectacular wrist shot that found the upper-left corner of the net.

Late in the period, Canada struck again as Jake Furlong’s (SJS) seeing-eye wrist shot beat Czech goalie Michael Hrabal’s (ARI) glove to square the game up.

The third period was tightly contested, with both teams blocking shots. A broken play led to Stancl's shot getting through and Rousseau misplayed it, leaving the post a tad early as the puck snuck past him.

Hrabal, an alumnus of the Omaha Lancers and current UMass netminder, made 28 saves and was named Czechia's player of the game.
