Top-ranked Penn State will be without one of its top performers for the remainder of the season.

Sophomore 149-pounder Shayne Van Ness suffered a season-ending injury, coach Cael Sanderson told the media Tuesday in State College.

“Unfortunately, he’s had issues with something and it’s kind of gotten tough and kind of got tweaked again in practice and (he will) get it repaired and get ready for next year,” Sanderson said. “Obviously, he’ll be sorely missed and there’s nothing worse than injuries.”

Van Ness caught fire in March at the NCAA Championships, finishing third at 149 after entering the tournament seeded 12th. He carried that momentum into this season and notched pins in his first three matches before downing Arizona State’s Kyle Parco 5-1 at the NWCA All-Star Classic.

The New Jersey native is currently ranked second.

Penn State used freshman Tyler Kasak in place of Van Ness on Sunday against Lehigh and the 2022 U17 World silver medalist registered a 7-6 win against Drew Munch.
