Last week, the Winnipeg Jets were 20 minutes away from adding to their two-game winning streak before Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe leveled Jets rookie Patrik Laine with a devastating hit.
Momentum swiftly changed hands as Buffalo rallied back from a 3-1 deficit with three third period goals following McCabe's hit.
McCabe, 23, is listed at 6-foot-1 and 209 pounds, but his force and the surprise of the hit still got the best of the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Laine. He played 13:06 and chipped in an assist before exiting the game.
Laine was the second-overall pick in this past June's draft, and was more than vocal leading up to and after the draft as he stated he should have been the No. 1 pick and will prove to be the best of his class.
He has backed up his confident talk thus far this season by recording 21 goals and 37 points through 42 games, which leads all rookies.
The team announced Laine would be out indefinitely after he was diagnosed with a concussion from the hit.
Laine was announced as Winnipeg's lone representative for the Central Division All-Star team Monday. The All-Star break begins Friday, January 27. Only time will tell if Laine will be ready to go by then.
